Applied Permaculture 4: Grafting Fruit Trees and Mycology in the Landscape

Learn the art of grafting apple and pear trees! And, learn how to include mushrooms in your food forest landscape!
Morning: You can use grafting to propagate your favorite apple and pear trees from a simple branch cutting. In this workshop, you will get hands-on practice, and, when you have mastered the skill, you will be able to graft onto rootstock. Every participant will take home two grafted trees. Contact us directly if you would like to purchase more. Our instructor is a practicing orchardist.
Afternoon: Fungi are a critical part of good soils, delivering nutrients to your trees’ roots and playing an important role in decomposition. Food forests with a healthy population of fungi are much more productive. Plus, the fruits of fungi are delicious mushrooms! In this workshop we will analyze how to include mushrooms in a Boston Food Forest site, and then implement a fungi-plan, by inoculating plant beds mushroom logs. You will go home with the knowledge to implement your own fungi-magic at your own food forest! Our instructor is a founding member of the Boston Food Forest Coalition and an expert mycologist.
